Review: Macbook Pro 17″ Unibody

Dengan di rilisnya Macbook Pro 17″ oleh Apple pada Macworld 2009, lengkaplah sudah keluarga notebook Apple yang terdiri dari Macbook, Macbook Air, Macbook Pro versi 15″ dan 17″. Walaupun mengalami penundaan karena belum lengkapnya part dari pihak supplier pembuat hardware, sehingga rilis Macbook Pro 17″ untuk sampai di tangan customer sempat tertunda. Setelah sekian lama menunggu, akhirnya saya bisa mendapatkan notebook tersebut hari ini di Jakarta. Berikut kesan-kesan ringkas yang saya dapatkan setelah menggunakan notebook Apple terbesar ini.

Kemasan dan Spesifikasi

Kemasan Macbook Pro 17″ ini memiliki bentuk lebih panjang daripada Macbook Pro 15″, tetapi lebih tipis. Sesuatu yang di perhatikan Apple dalam kampanye “Green for environment” mereka.

• 17″ Layar Glossy resolusi 1900×1200 LED Backlighting.
• 320GB Serial ATA at 5400-rpm.
• 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T9550 dengan 6MB L2 cache
• 4GB (two 2GB) of 1066MHz PC3-8500 DDR3

Perubahan Utama

1. Layar

Macbook Pro 17 Inch keluaran Apple ini merupakan Notebook dengan layar terbesar dari keluarga Macbook Pro. Salah satu poin utama adalah kualitas layarnya yang sangat baik disertakan dengan resolusi tinggi sebesar 1900×1200 yang mengagumkan untuk dilihat dengan kapasitas 60% range warna lebih nyata dan akurat. Untuk memesan layar opsi Anti-Glare, anda harus memesannya dengan melalui Apple Store Indonesia dengan biaya tambahan kurang lebih sebesar Rp. 650 ribu.

Macbook Pro 17″ memiliki frame bezel yang lebih tipis dibandingkan versi 15″. Bezel yang tipis membuat tampilan astetika lebih indah.

2. Kapasitas Baterai

Kapasitas baterai yang dijanjikan bisa digunakan untuk 8 jam pada kondisi aktifitas internet dan untuk sekedar mengetik dokumen. Ukuran baterai lebih besar daripada notebook lainnya, tetapi pengguna tidak dapat mudah untuk mengganti baterai pada saat diperlukan dengan mudah. Anda harus membuka bagian cover belakang dengan obeng, dan tentunya itu bukanlah sesuatu yang akan Anda lakukan ketika sedang di perjalanan.

5 jam, not bad..

Tes yang saya lakukan adalah dengan melakukan charging batere sampai penuh, lalu menyalakan iTunes, mail dan safari 4 untuk melakukan browsing. Hasil yang saya dapatkan adalah 5 jam 10 menit. Mungkin dengan mematikan iTunes saya akan mendapatkan lebih banyak waktu dari batere. Tetapi 5 jam bukanlah juga sesuatu yang buruk.

Perbandingan Dengan Versi 15″

Berat notebook ini tidaklah terlalu jauh dari versi 15″, tetapi hal yang mengganggu portabilitasnya adalah komposisi panjang dan lebar nya. Sehingga anda memerlukan tas yang lebih besar untuk membawanya.

Versi 17″ ini memiliki ketebalan lebih banyak 0.03 inch daripada versi 15″ nya, ketebalan terletak pada layar. Tetapi bukanlah sesuatu yang signifikan karena bila di jejerkan hampir terlihat sama.

Macbook Pro 17″ ini juga mempunyai 4 speaker, sehingga suara surround lebih terdengar. Tetapi tetaplah menggunakan speaker yang mempunyai subwoofer sendiri untuk mendapatkan hasil suara lebih baik.

Hasil Xbench

Mesin tes untuk perbandingan yang saya gunakan adalah:

1. Macbook Pro 15″ Custom built dengan 2.8Ghz Core 2 Duo (L2 Cache 6MB), Memori 4GB DDR3, dan Hard disk 300GB 5400RPM, Nvidia Geforce 9600GT 512MB GDDR3

2. Macbook Pro 17″ 2.66Ghz Core 2 Duo (L2 Cache 6MB), Memori 4GB DDR3, dan Hard disk 300GB 5400RPM, Nvidia Geforce 9600GT 512MB GDDR3

Hasil:

Macbook Pro 15″ Custom Processor: 145.36

Macbook Pro 17″: 137.76

Jadi dengan hasil diatas, Macbook Pro 15″ dengan prosesor yang lebih tinggi dari Macbook Pro 17″ memiliki hasil yang lebih tinggi dikarenakan oleh prosesor 2.8Ghz nya.

Kekurangan

Tidak ada kekurangan berarti bagi saya untuk Macbook Pro 17″ ini, hanya sedikit disayangkan dengan harga notebook yang berkisar di Rp. 35 jutaan, Apple tidak mengikutkan Remote dan mini Display Port to DVI connector. Sehingga anda harus membelinya lagi secara terpisah.

“Steamy” New Anti-Piracy Measures Coming to Games for Windows

Piracy prevention is increasingly moving toward online authentication and license purchase rather than the traditional disc and data encryption that prevented unauthorized copying and distribution. Microsoft just announced some new elements of Games for Windows that indicate a shift toward a Steam-like, online activation model. Microsoft goes to great lengths to avoid use of that game-killing dirty acronym, DRM, but DRM by any other name…

It looks like Games for Windows will include a onetime activation that will only decrypt critical data if a game can be confirmed as officially released. Given that many games are downloaded illegally millions of times before they officially ship, Microsoft is trying to counter the distribution of prematurely leaked games.

Last year’s Spore, for example, would have benefited greatly from zero-day piracy countermeasures; it was well on its way to being the most pirated game of 2008 long before its official release date.

Microsoft’s authentication measures will amount to a Steam-style authentication for offline games, and will include the ability to save game data on external servers. Microsoft dresses this up as a boon for gamers: “Hey kids! You can play your saved game anywhere!” In reality, it is a quite transparent means of keeping tabs on license rights. But it needn’t be a bad thing, Microsoft’s DRM-lite isn’t any more severe than what you currently find on consoles.

Microsoft’s anti-piracy measures will end up being a mixed bag for gamers. Users without an internet connection will be forced to get online to authenticate their copy of a game. *Boo!* *Hiss!* But frankly, compared to more draconian DRM measures, like only allowing three installs of a game ever, Games for Windows will be a bit easier to swallow.

Microsoft privateers might be successful in reducing piracy to a degree, but as many have learned, online authentication cum marketplace services like Steam can rouse the ire of entire communities. We’ll have to wait for Windows 7 to go gold to get an idea of just how effectiveand intrusive Microsoft’s new measures will be.

Gamers of the World Rejoice! Windows 7 Frame Rates Good on DX10 Games

By now, it should be clear that Windows 7 is going to be better than Vista by leaps and bounds. Windows 7 is lighter on resources, bug free, and aesthetically pleasing. So far it looks better than Vista in terms of productivity, usability and hardware compatibility. Most importantly however, Windows 7 is going to excel in the arena we all truly care about–gaming. The dork-o-nets have already been hard at work benchmarking video cards on Windows 7, and happily, frame rates are looking promising.

The good folks at extremetech did the community the service of firing up a handful of new games on Vista and Windows 7 with some popular video cards. Extremetech’s battery of tests included the latest NVIDIA and ATI video cards in action on Crysis, Left 4 Dead, World in Conflict, Company of Heroes, Far Cry 2, and some popular benchmarks. The 3DMark Vantage test yeilded identical results in both Windows 7 and Vista. From a strict hardware point of view, Vista and 7 power video cards equally well.

A benchmark test, however, is never as reliable as a hands-on test with some demanding games. On the whole, NVIDIA’s GeForce 9800 and GTX 285 achieved similar framerates on both Vista and Windows 7 on most games. Unlike GeForce, Radeon’s cards performed substantially better on Windows 7. Take a look at Radeon’s performance on the system crusher, Crysis:

I’m expecting Radeon’s video cards to perform even better by the time Windows 7 goes gold. Today, AMD released an update to their ATI Radeon Catalyst drivers that include support for the Windows 7 Beta. The drivers address specific games and their performance on 7, among other things.
